Enviromentalism is a religion. Mother Earth is God. The rising waters from melting ice caps is their flood myth. The New York times is their scripture. Al Gore is a prophet. Global warming is the apocolypse. Becoming green is repenting. And now, Earth Hour is their sabbath.
Earth Hour, sponsored by the World Wildlife Foundation, where people are supposed to power down all electronic equipment for one hour. Earth Hour is not a sceintific experiment, but rather a means to send a message to our government about global warming.
Earth Hour is a time for people to reflect on Mother Earth, to send the world a message about the apocolypse. Jews have been taking one day out the week to be with God and unplug from the world. It's called Shabbat, or sabbath. Christians and Muslims both have days where they unplug from the world and focus on God.
I undertand that Earth Hour is just one hour, but what if it catches on? What if people start spending Earth Hur every weekend? And then Earth hour becomes Earth Day. (Or do we already have an Earth day?) It's silly, and I'm not being an alarmist, but I just find it fascinating how humans will always end up in some form of religion. In this case, enviromntalism.
